How many casualties
In total there were 185 people that died from the Christchurch Earthquake 2011. Out of the 185 people who lost their lives, the nationalities included people from more than 20 different countries with most of the casualties being New Zealanders.
In specific there was one main building that the majority of deaths occurred, which was the Canterbury Television Building. So many people died in this building due to the massive earthquake. The earthquake caused the building to collapse into rubble, only leaving the lift shaft standing - which then caught fire.
The Canterbury television building housed a TV station, an English language school and a medical school.
